マイクロソフト社が販売しているOS（基本ソフト）の名前です。

基本的にPC/AT互換機用の標準OSです。

Windowsという名前がつくOSはたくさんあり、私たちが一般的に使うOSはWindowsXPやWindows98、WindowsMeです。
業務用に使われるOSもあり、Windows Server 2003やWindows Server 2000など様々な用途によってOSが違うのも特徴です。
